Tour Description

Day 1

We will gather in Los Molles at 6 p.m. for the Entry process.

Following this, the guides who will accompany you on this adventure will conduct an in-depth briefing about the route. We will then proceed with the " Customs," which involves selecting all the necessary items for our journey that will be packed into two saddlebags. The rest of your belongings will be securely stored at the Hostel.

This initial day is designed to be relaxed, allowing you to acquaint yourself with your fellow riders and guides. It's also crucial to acclimate to the altitude. We'll spend our first evening enjoying a delightful dinner at the Hostel.

Day 2

Bright and early, after a hearty breakfast, we will depart by van to Las Leñas Chicas, where we will meet our travel companions: the horses.

With the assistance of guides and local experts, horses are carefully chosen to suit each rider perfectly.

We will embark on our ride, making our way to Portezuelo Ancho for a cold lunch before continuing our journey to the camp in Valle Hermoso.

At our campsite, we'll set up for our first night in the outdoors, crafting our "beds" with tarps, sleeping bags, and blankets. Meanwhile, the guide's assistant will prepare a fire for cooking, and we'll enjoy the evening under the stars, accompanied by a stove, guitar, and the tranquility of the Andes.

Day 3

Following breakfast, we'll ready our horses to journey west towards the Trujillo stream. After a cold lunch and a restful break, we'll continue riding to reach the Piedras Negras summer post, where we will camp for the third night. Riding times consist of approximately 3 hours in the morning and about 2 hours in the afternoon.

Day 4

On the fourth day, after breakfast, we will prepare the mules and saddlebags as we ascend to the border with Chile (Santa Elena pass, 3080 meters).

Upon returning to the camp after lunch, we'll be welcomed with delicious fried cakes as a snack, and spend the fourth night dining under the vast skies. Our riding time will total around 7 hours.

Day 5

After breakfast, we will head towards the Yesera post of the middle Gr Turismo Aventura Base Camp. Following lunch, we will cross the Cobre River.

On this final night, we will enjoy a trick tournament after dinner.

Day 6

With breakfast complete, we'll conduct the final saddling of our horses and mules.

Concluding our adventure, we will proceed to Portezuelo Ancho, where a delicious lunch, fresh beer, and vehicles will be waiting to transport us back to the Pehuenche Refuge in Los Molles, arriving between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. After a leisurely afternoon, we'll gather for dinner and a farewell.

The Crossing of the Andes horseback riding excursion is an adventure tourism experience that typically includes a saddled Criollo horse, bilingual muleteers/guides, basic camping equipment, meals during the trek, and logistical support. The itinerary traverses Andean valleys, mountain passes, and mountain rivers, with 4–7 hours of riding per day and overnight stays in campsites or outposts. The exact duration and route vary depending on the departure date and weather conditions. Before booking, please request a day-by-day itinerary, approximate altitudes, a map of the route, and details of transfers/return. Limited spaces available: advance booking is recommended, and safety conditions must be confirmed.

The Andes Crossing horseback riding tour is designed for travelers with moderate fitness and an active spirit. Expert riding experience is not required: beginner to intermediate riders are welcome, provided they can ride for several hours and follow the guide's instructions. Weight and age limits usually apply; please inquire about restrictions for pregnant women and the requirement for a medical certificate. The altitude and terrain demand balance and good health; basic riding experience and gradual acclimatization are recommended. Inform the guide of any injuries or allergies when booking and purchase travel insurance that covers equestrian and mountain activities.

The best time for this adventure trek is usually the Southern Hemisphere summer (November to March), when the mountain passes are more passable and there are more hours of daylight. Even so, high-altitude weather is variable: mild to hot days, cold nights, Andean winds, and the possibility of late-season rain or snow. Dress in layers (base layer, fleece, waterproof/windproof jacket), and bring a hat, gloves, UV sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. In spring or autumn, the trek may require greater tolerance for cold and mud. Itineraries are subject to change based on the weather forecast and may be adjusted for safety.

The agency usually provides a saddled Criollo horse, reins, basic saddlebags, and camping equipment; some trips include a helmet. Verify exactly what is included. Recommended personal equipment: your own helmet, mountain sleeping bag, sleeping pad, low-heeled boots, thermal jacket, waterproof jacket, change of clothes, gloves, headlamp, 1–2 L water bottle, power bank, sunscreen, and personal first-aid kit. Use a soft bag; luggage travels on mules with a weight limit. Bring documents and some cash. Avoid perfumes and glass containers. Apply principles of minimal impact for sustainable tourism in the Andes.

The price of the Crossing the Andes horseback riding tour varies depending on the season, duration, group size, included services (transfers, pre- and post-tour accommodations), and type of campsite. Request an updated quote in USD/ARS and terms and conditions. To guarantee your spot, make a reservation with a deposit and complete the medical forms. Cancellation and rescheduling policies due to weather are usually flexible with prior notice; request details in writing. The tour operator has its own insurance, but it is essential to purchase travel insurance that covers equestrian activities and high-altitude mountaineering. Verify documentation for any border crossings, health requirements, and safety recommendations.
