We continue our journey past the Horn Post, making our way to Tilcara to explore Pucará and the Archaeological Museum.

Our next destination is Huacalera, where we cross the Tropic of Capricorn. From this point, you can admire the vibrant hues of the Pollera de la Colla Hill. We’ll visit the Church of Uquía, home to the renowned Angels Arcabuceros paintings, significant examples of Cuzco-style art. We then reach Humahuaca, noted for its impressive Cathedral and the Monument to Independence (El Indio) by sculptor Soto Avendaño.

Continuing our expedition, we traverse through the village of Iturbe and Abra del Cóndor (3900 meters above sea level) to arrive at the entrance of a quaint canyon, home to the pre-Hispanic village of Iruya. Entrance fees, tips, and extras are confirmed with the tour operator. Basic assistance and insurance are provided, according to local regulations.

The typical itinerary prioritizes landscapes and culture. Day 1: Early departure, scenic drive along Route 9, stops in Purmamarca (Hill of Seven Colors), viewpoints overlooking the Humahuaca Gorge, and Andean villages; arrival in Iruya via a mountain road, free afternoon to stroll along its cobblestone streets and viewpoints. Day 2: Morning in Iruya with time for photos and local shopping; return with strategic stops for regional cuisine and views. These are long days on the road with multiple stops, subject to weather and mountain traffic. Departures are usually between 7:00 and 8:00 AM, and the return is on the afternoon of the second day. Exact times are confirmed upon booking.

This excursion is suitable for travelers in good health, but it crosses high-altitude areas: the route to Iruya and the Humahuaca Gorge can exceed 4,000 meters above sea level. Altitude sickness (soroche) is possible. Recommendations: stay hydrated, eat light meals, avoid alcohol and strenuous activity, walk slowly, and get a good night's sleep beforehand. If you have heart or respiratory conditions, are pregnant, or are traveling with young children or elderly adults, consult your doctor and the tour operator. Bring any prescribed altitude sickness medication, if needed. The hikes are optional and range from low to moderate difficulty. Travel insurance is advisable for mountain tourism.

The Andean climate features a wide temperature range: cold mornings and nights, sunny middays, and wind. Pack layers: a technical t-shirt, fleece or softshell jacket, windproof and waterproof jacket, and comfortable pants. Add a hat, lightweight gloves, and a buff. Footwear: hiking shoes or boots with good traction. Essentials: high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, lip balm, reusable water bottle, energy snacks, power bank, headlamp, and personal first-aid kit. Bring cash in case of poor internet connectivity; your ID or passport, travel insurance, and camera. Rain is possible in summer; a poncho or rain cover will help protect your gear and clothing.

The excursion to Iruya and the Humahuaca Gorge is available year-round. From April to November (dry season), skies are clearer and roads are more stable; from December to March, summer rains and occasional road closures are possible, so flexibility is advisable. Special dates such as Carnival, Easter, or Pachamama in August increase demand. Prices vary depending on the season, number of passengers, type of accommodation, and extra services. Book in advance; inquire about payment methods (credit card, bank transfer, or cash) and cancellation or rescheduling policies. You will receive an electronic confirmation and voucher. Any adjustments due to weather or route will be coordinated with the tour operator.
