Tour Description
We will embark on our adventure from the meeting point at 8:00 am. Departing from Las Grutas, we will head south along National Route No. 3.
As we journey along the route, we'll delve into the history and key highlights of this Patagonian region. After traveling 140 km, we will reach the town of Sierra Grande, home to Argentina's largest iron mine. This town was a ghost town following the mine's closure in 1994 until it reopened two decades later.
Traveling fifty kilometers further south, we will cross into the province of Chubut. An hour later, we'll arrive at Peninsula Valdés, a UNESCO Natural Heritage of Humanity site.
Our first stop on the Peninsula will be the Istmo Ameghino Interpretation Center, featuring six rooms where we can explore the history of native peoples, the flora and fauna of the Patagonian steppe and peninsula coast, and marine life in the Argentine sea. Here, we will see a gigantic skeleton of the Southern Right Whale, offering a prelude to our upcoming onboard sighting. From the center's panoramic viewpoint, we can admire Golfo Nuevo, Golfo San José, and Isla Pájaros.
Continuing our journey, just before reaching the vibrant town of Punta Pirámides, we will stop at the wolfhouse, home to a significant colony of Lobos de Un Pelo. Between November and January, they gather here to birth their young. We will enjoy a stunning landscape, surrounded by seagulls, cormorants, dolphins, whales, and occasionally orcas, which visit these deep blue waters, framed by cliffs and a refreshing breeze.
Once in Puerto Pirámides, we will board a boat for nearly two hours to observe the Southern Right Whale. This area hosts a community of about 1,500 whales each year for mating, treating us to a spectacular display of jumps and graceful movements up close.
After the whale watching, depending on the weather and time, we may dine by the sea at an old tavern in the port or proceed directly north on Peninsula Valdés to Estancia San Lorenzo, where we will enjoy lunch and discover the secrets of life on a Patagonian ranch and the art of shearing.
Post-lunch, we will head to the coast in an old military truck to witness one of the area's most stunning and must-see landscapes, La Pingüinera. This coastal region is teeming with Magellanic Penguins, who nest here in spring. We can approach the penguins closely, provided we respect and preserve their habitat and peace.
We will conclude our day by learning more about the local history and fauna. Our journey will take us back to Las Grutas via the same route, ending with drop-off at the meeting point around 7 pm.
