We invite you to embark on a new adventure, blending trails, rock, and ice, where you can experience the unparalleled thrill of camping beside a Glacier. You'll have the chance to witness the untouched beauty of the Cagliero Sur Glacier, which has thrived for years due to its optimal orientation and snow accumulation from the Neumayer, Cagliero, and Loma del Diablo hills. To the south, you'll be captivated by the sheer cliffs of the Thirty Anniversary Hill and its spires, with the Devil's Tooth standing out prominently. Our itinerary includes lodging, dinner, lunch, and breakfast.
Tour Description
If you select the WITH TRANSFERS option, our journey will commence at 8 am by picking you up from your accommodations in El Chaltén and transporting you to the Los Huemules Reserve. At 9:00 a.m., we'll kick off our adventure from the Visitor Center. Our path follows the Diablo River upstream, leading us through a vibrant lenga forest on a well-maintained trail for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes until we reach the stunning Diablo Lagoon, situated at 770 meters above sea level. This spot offers a view of the Cagliero Post and marks the beginning of the second stage of our excursion, which takes us beyond the Los Huemules Reserve into a private property known as Campo Gorra Blanca. The distance covered is 7 km, with an ascent gradient of 300 meters.
The second segment of our tour involves navigating the northern edge of Laguna del Diablo. The terrain here is easy yet irregular, leading us to the start of a Via Ferrata—rock climbing sections of low difficulty equipped with steel cables and artificial steps to ensure safety and autonomy. Prior to embarking on this part of the journey, our guides will provide participants with essential gear and instruction on its safe and correct usage. As you gain confidence with the equipment, the trek becomes increasingly exhilarating, turning this portion into an adventure of its own. The higher you ascend, the more breathtaking the views of Diablo Lagoon and its namesake valley become. It takes about an hour and a half to reach the Mirador del Glaciar. From this vantage point, looking north, you'll witness the untouched beauty of the Cagliero Sur Glacier, standing at 950 meters above sea level. A brief walk from the viewpoint brings us to the Glacier's forefront, where guides will equip hikers with crampons. The distance covered here is 4 km, with an elevation gain of 400 meters.
Our program's third phase involves trekking directly on the glacier. Weather permitting, we'll enjoy lunch on the glacier itself. We plan to spend roughly 3 hours on the ice, offering opportunities for ice climbing, contingent on weather conditions and the group's physical capabilities. By afternoon, we’ll return to the Vivac Cagliero shelter, where a warm drink awaits as you soak in views of the Glacier. Dinner will be served in the evening, followed by a restful night in our Vivac Dome equipped with 6 beds.
The following morning, after breakfast and before lunch, we’ll begin our return journey. We’ll retrace our steps along the Via Ferrata back to the Base Dome, after which we’ll embark on a hike along the path of Green and Blue lagoons, unveiling new landscapes and offering views of the North face of Cerro Fitz Roy. The transfer back to El Chaltén is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., with hotel drop-offs around 6:30 p.m.
