Frequently Asked Questions
The classic Puerto Madryn tour package typically includes: airport-hotel-airport transfers (Trelew or Puerto Madryn), 2 to 4 nights' accommodation with breakfast, regular excursions to Península Valdés (Puerto Pirámides) with a bilingual guide and stops for observing Patagonian wildlife. Whale watching is optional and subject to availability. Airfare, lunches/dinners, entrance fees to protected natural areas, and port taxes are generally not included. Hotel upgrades or private services can be added. Exact services may vary depending on the date, weather, and availability; please check the tour details before booking.
Puerto Madryn is ideal for nature tourism in Argentine Patagonia. The best time to visit depends on what you're looking for: southern right whales, from June to December (peak July–November) on the Valdés Peninsula; Magellanic penguins, from September to March (peak October–December) at Punta Tombo; elephant seals and sea lions, year-round; orcas, occasional sightings March–April. Spring and early autumn offer milder weather and less wind. During peak season, it's advisable to book hotels, excursions, and boat trips in advance. Bring a jacket or sweater, even in summer: the Patagonian wind can make it feel quite cold.
The typical Puerto Madryn Classic tour itinerary lasts 3 to 4 days. Day 1: Arrival, transfer to the hotel, and free time or a coastal city tour. Day 2: Full-day excursion to Península Valdés (Puerto Pirámides, Caleta Valdés, optional whale watching in season). Day 3: Departure for Punta Tombo (penguin colony, depending on the season) or the Lower Chubut River Valley (Gaiman/Trelew). Day 4: Free morning and transfer to the airport. Schedules may be adjusted due to tides, weather, and regulations of the Protected Natural Area. The tour operates as a regular service with hotel pick-up; private tours are also available, subject to availability.
This excursion is of low physical exertion, suitable for families and seniors in good health. It includes short walks along boardwalks and trails; the boat tour may not be suitable for pregnant women or people with back problems. To enjoy the trip, bring: a waterproof/windproof jacket, thermal layers, closed-toe non-slip shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, water, and snacks. Binoculars and a camera are also useful. Consider bringing cash for entrance fees and lunch. We recommend waterproof bags for equipment and seasickness medication if you will be boating. Bring your ID/passport and travel insurance. Always respect the distances from wildlife and park regulations.
Tour package prices vary depending on the season (high/low), hotel category, type of excursion (regular or private), and whether you add the whale watching boat trip. You can book online by credit card or bank transfer; a deposit is usually required, with the balance due before the trip. You will receive a confirmation and voucher with the itinerary, pick-up times, and emergency contact information. The cancellation and change policy depends on how far in advance you book and the date: there are deadlines for refunds and penalties for no-shows. If a boat trip is canceled due to weather, it will be rescheduled or refunded. We recommend purchasing travel insurance.
