Tour Description

The day before the adventure, we will meet at a designated point to undergo equipment testing and participate in a preliminary briefing where we will be informed about what essentials to bring along.
On the day of the excursion, at approximately 10 a.m., our guide will collect us from our lodging and transport us to the starting point of the activity area. Prior to commencing, the guide will provide an instructional session along with advice regarding the terrain we will be skiing on.
Our ascent will take us through the hidden valley, renowned as one of the most picturesque locations in San Martín de los Andes, reaching an altitude of 1,700 meters. We will navigate various paths, experiencing several descents and inclines, as we traverse open areas, steppes, frozen lakes, and dense forests.
We will make several technical stops to hydrate and consume energy-boosting snacks to sustain our skiing journey.
Throughout the trek, we will be treated to breathtaking views of the Lanin Volcano, the Lacar Valley, and numerous snow-capped peaks and ravines.
Our skiing day will conclude with a delightful snack while overlooking the town of San Martín de los Andes. Subsequently, we will return our ski gear to the guide, and around 4:00 p.m., a shuttle will transport us back to our accommodation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ski touring in Valle Escondido is an active tourism experience designed for skiers in good physical condition with solid skills on ungroomed snow. Expertise is not required, but prior off-piste experience, skin handling, and controlled turns on moderate slopes are recommended. The mountain guide will assess your skill level during the briefing and adapt the itinerary, pace, and elevation gain to the group. Age and health restrictions may apply. If you are a beginner, inquire about introductory outings or lessons. It's an ideal adventure for travelers seeking nature, pristine snow, and Patagonian landscapes.

The tour typically includes a certified mountain guide, technical ski touring or splitboard equipment (skis/snowboards, skins, poles), and an avalanche safety kit (avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe). Helmets, first-aid kits, and a technical briefing are usually provided. Some tours include transportation from the meeting point and a snack/box lunch; please check when booking. Personal technical clothing (thermal layers, waterproof jacket, goggles, gloves), travel insurance, drinks, and tips are not usually included. Bring a 25–35 L backpack, 1–2 L of water, sunscreen, lip balm, and energy snacks. Inquire about equipment rental, sizes, and availability for your travel dates.

The typical itinerary begins early with a meeting and equipment check in the base town. A short transfer then takes place to the start of the route, followed by a safety briefing and avalanche transceiver (ARVA) test. The ascent using climbing skins lasts between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the group and snow conditions; stops are made for hydration and photos. After reaching a col or summit, the descent is made through virgin snow to the valley below. The entire experience usually takes 6–8 hours. The meeting point, exact times, and logistics are confirmed on the travel voucher. Return transport may be included or available as an add-on, depending on the price.

Safety is paramount on this winter adventure excursion. Certified guides assess avalanche reports and weather forecasts, choose conservative itineraries, and can reschedule due to bad weather. Before departure, a briefing and avalanche transceiver check are conducted, along with basic rescue drills. The group maintains appropriate ratios and radio communication; a first-aid kit and emergency protocols are carried. Travel insurance with coverage for winter sports, rescue, and medical expenses is recommended. If conditions are not optimal, alternative routes will be suggested or the itinerary adjusted. Your guide will advise you for a safe experience.

The best time for ski touring in Patagonia is usually from June to September (sometimes until October), with snow ranging from winter to spring. Mountain weather is changeable: wind, cold, and snowfall can alter the plan; departures are confirmed 24–48 hours in advance. To book, choose a date, indicate your experience level and equipment sizes, and pay the deposit according to the terms and conditions. Review the cancellation policy: there are usually periods with partial refunds and changes subject to availability and weather conditions. Prices vary depending on the type of trip (shared group or private), equipment rental, and transportation. We recommend booking in advance during peak season.
