Upon arrival at Puerto Chucao, we'll embark on a brief walk leading us to the South East arm of Lake Menéndez. We'll traverse the wooden footbridges over the Arrayanes River and skirt a portion of the lake, soaking in its stunning emerald waters, until we reach the boat awaiting us for a closer experience of the lake.
Our cruise on Lake Menéndez lasts 40 minutes, guiding us to Puerto Nuevo while offering breathtaking views of snow-dusted peaks and the lush Patagonian forests embracing the lake. Upon reaching Puerto Nuevo, we'll disembark and commence the ascent to the Glacier.
The trek to the Torrecillas Glacier unveils one of the most remarkable sections of the Alerces National Park. The two-hour hike immerses us in the Valdivian Rainforest, presenting a medium-level challenge. We will navigate through steep and rocky paths, as our guide shares insights into the area’s flora and fauna, rich in history and geological transformations.
As we approach the final stretch, we will cross a small mountain stream leading us to the Laguna del Antiguo, nestled at the foot of the Torrecillas Glacier. Here, we will choose a perfect spot to rest and marvel at the glacier's grandeur. We'll admire ancient larches and other species like tineos, coihues, and lengas. This location reveals the basins where snow accumulated and glacier ice formed during the last glaciation over 24,000 years ago. If fortune favors us, we might spot condors, in addition to witnessing the awe-inspiring glacier ice calving into the lagoon.
After our break and capturing the mesmerizing landscape with our cameras, we will retrace our steps back to Puerto Nuevo, where we'll reboard the boat to return to Puerto Chucao, concluding our services.
