Frequently Asked Questions

The best time for underwater whale watching in Península Valdés is from June to December, when the southern right whale arrives to breed. Peak months are usually September, October, and November, with a high probability of encounters. Departures from Puerto Pirámides operate daily, but depend on wind, tide, and sea conditions. Therefore, it is recommended to book in advance during peak season and reconfirm the schedule 24 hours prior. Mornings generally offer better conditions. The tour adheres to responsible ecotourism practices; while whale sightings are highly likely, they can never be guaranteed.

The tour takes place on a semi-submersible vessel equipped with large panoramic windows on the underwater level and an open-air upper deck offering 360° views. This configuration allows you to alternate between surface observation and a unique underwater perspective, ideal for photography and videography. You'll see southern right whales swimming close to the hull, their fins, baleen, and, with luck, interactions between calves and mothers. A bilingual guide will explain the wildlife, the geology of the Valdés Peninsula, and best conservation practices. The tour is immersive and comfortable, with no need to dive or get wet.

The price of the underwater whale watching tour varies depending on the season, availability, age, and current promotions. We suggest checking the updated price and booking online in advance, as spaces are limited by the tide and boat capacity. Full payment or a deposit is generally required, and you will receive a digital voucher for check-in. If the Coast Guard or the tour company cancels due to wind or waves, rescheduling at no charge or a refund is offered, depending on your preference. Voluntary changes by the passenger are subject to each operator's policy. Entrance to the Península Valdés Protected Natural Area is not usually included.

The underwater viewing excursion typically lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours, including a safety briefing and navigation. The meeting and boarding point is in Puerto Pirámides, on the Valdés Peninsula; it is recommended to arrive 30 to 45 minutes prior to departure for check-in. The service includes a specialized guide, environmental interpretation, passenger insurance, and certified safety equipment. Transfers from Puerto Madryn or other cities, photographs, meals, tips, entrance fees to the Protected Natural Area, and any applicable port taxes are not usually included. The operation is subject to sea conditions, so schedules may be adjusted.

This is a family-friendly activity suitable for children accompanied by an adult. Pregnant women and people with back, neck, heart, or mobility problems should consult their doctor and the operator; access to the underwater level is via stairs. Safety includes life jackets on board, a certified crew, and adherence to responsible whale watching guidelines. We recommend bringing layers of clothing, a waterproof jacket, non-slip footwear, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a camera with UV protection. If you are prone to seasickness, take medication 30 to 60 minutes beforehand and avoid alcohol. Arrive early and double-check the schedule, as Patagonian weather can change.
