If you find yourself exploring Argentina, a visit to the Ischigualasto Park, also known as "Valle De La Luna", is a must. This extraordinary destination, off the beaten path, captivates visitors with its unique formations and distinctive soil characteristics.

The area's remarkable features and its significance for archaeological and paleontological research led UNESCO to designate it as a World Heritage Site in 2000. The region, comprising Talampaya National Park and Ischigualasto Provincial Park, is collectively recognized as the Ischigualasto / Talampaya Natural Parks.

Ischigualasto Provincial Park stands out globally for its Triassic period continental sediments. It boasts rocks in shades of ash, white, gray, and vibrant reds and vermilion, which preserve fossils of ancient reptiles and dinosaurs. Occupying 2,916 hectares, it is situated in the northern part of San Juan province.

The park's intriguing geoforms, such as (The Submarine, The Mushroom, the Bocce Court), and the fossils of the oldest dinosaurs are major attractions. This site, often referred to as "Valle de la Luna", draws its name from its resemblance to the lunar surface.

Descripción del Tour

We will commence our journey from selected hotels in San Juan starting at 7 AM, traveling along the National Tourist Route 150 to arrive at Ischigualasto Park, famously known as the "Valley of the Moon". Accompanied by park guides, we will explore the 4-hour internal circuit in our vehicles.

The circuit spans approximately 40 km and includes five key stations. At each station, you'll discover significant geoforms with detailed explanations and interpretations provided by the guides. Their insights are crucial for understanding the natural signs left here over more than two hundred million years.

The stations we will visit include:

- "The Worm": As the oldest section of the circuit, this area features rocks that are over 200 million years old, where fossilized ferns can be observed with the naked eye.
- "Valle Pintado": Named the Valley of the Moon due to its resemblance to a lunar landscape, it is the site where the majority of known remains and fossils in the area have been discovered.
- Cancha de Bochas: This unique location naturally hosts dozens of spherical rocks formed through a long sedimentation process. En route to this station, we will also view The Sphinx, a geoform known for its likeness to the Egyptian Sphinx.
- The Submarine: Situated in the park's highest area, this station showcases the effects of differential erosion and offers an exceptional panoramic view of the Barrancas Coloradas and the Purple Hill.
- El Hongo: This is the most recognized image of Ischigualasto Park and a symbol of San Juan tourism. It vividly displays the effects of differential erosion, where softer rock at the base erodes more than the harder rock on top, creating a "balancing" effect.

At the conclusion of the tour, we will visit the Interpretation Center and the Museum of Natural Sciences, located at the entrance of the Park. Here, paleontological pieces discovered on-site are exhibited, and their significance is highlighted. We will also receive explanations from the guides on the processes of research, tracking, fossil recovery, and dinosaur assembly. We will return to San Juan city in the evening hours.
