Tour Description
Our adventure kicks off from the meeting point at 9:00 am. We will bid farewell to Las Grutas as we journey along National Route 23 towards Valcheta.
After an hour on the road, we will reach the town of Valcheta, a place that might go unnoticed yet holds countless secrets, which we will uncover with the help of an expert historian guide, revealing the mysteries of this part of Patagonia Argentina.
Our first stop is the charming local museum, known as Museo Provincial María Inés Koop, housed in the old power plant. It is a museum of history and Natural Sciences, featuring numerous artifacts that connect us to the past, including ancient dinosaur eggs; petrified palm shells with fossil dates; Milodon's bones; a stunning range of geological stones; ceremonial axes; arrowheads; scrapers; bone utensils, and even fossilized remains of what once were enormous trees providing shade and sustenance to the local saurians when the area was a tropical forest.
Next, we will explore the petrified forest, where towering conifers and palm trees over 30 meters long await to amaze us. As we walk the trails, surrounded by shrubby vegetation, we will discover branches, fruits, and fossilized dates. Our guides will enlighten us on the ancient Patagonia, its transformation over millions of years, and the fossilization process and its causes.
Our journey continues to the Valcheta Artisan Market, offering a chance to immerse ourselves in the Gaucho life of Patagonia and purchase matras, vibrant ponchos crafted from virgin sheep wool, handwoven by Mapuche women. Other locally made items include key rings, booties, scarves, blankets, table centerpieces, kettles, and coats, all of the highest quality.
Before lunch, our final stop is the Valcheta Train Station, inaugurated by President Figueroa Alcorta in 1910. Here, telegraphs, old magneto phones, and salamanders still operate, offering a nostalgic journey back in time. The station's preservation, furniture, and atmosphere reflect the locals' respect for their heritage and history.
To conclude this historical journey, we will indulge in a gourmet culinary experience. We will travel south from Valcheta on a gravel road to Chipauquil, a quaint rural area at the northern entrance of the magnificent Somuncurá plateau ( El Fuerte Argentino ). Behind a wind-breaking fruit grove lies La Estancia Sensoriel, a lush, idyllic space traversed by the Valcheta stream. Here, French hosts will welcome us to savor a delightful gourmet meal blending Avignon's traditional recipes with Patagonian allure, alongside engaging conversations and fine wines. After lunch, if you desire, you can refresh yourself in the stream's waters.
We will return to Las Grutas around 5:00 p.m., following the same route, concluding the services with a drop-off at the meeting point.
