This location was once the southernmost settlement of the Inca Empire. You can explore the central square where ceremonies took place, their living and meeting areas, and the famous "stairs to heaven."
The route to the ruins offers stunning views, allowing you to admire Cerro Negro, the Colorado River, and pass through the city of London.
Throughout the journey, you'll gain a deep understanding of the history of these native peoples, all while being surrounded by breathtaking landscapes as you approach the ruins.
Tour Description
The adventure kicks off as we collect you from your accommodation.
The journey to the Shincal Ruins of Quimivil takes us through mesmerizing landscapes. For instance, our path will lead us along the Colorado River, which offers breathtaking views along the way.
We'll also make a stop at Cerro Negro, a remarkable mountain situated in Catamarca, Argentina. Standing at approximately 5,700 meters above sea level, it ranks among the highest peaks in the area. Its name is derived from the dark hue of its stones and volcanic rocks, lending it a unique look.
As we near our primary destination, we’ll pass through London, known as the second oldest city in Argentina (established in 1588), followed by Santiago del Estero. At this stage, we're already alongside National Route 40 and at the base of the Shincal mountain range, close to the Quimivil River.
Now in the Belén department, we journey through the gorge of the Quimivil River on Route 40 to reach this historically significant archaeological site in Catamarca's history: the Shincal Ruins of Quimivil. This site marks the southernmost city of the Inca Empire.
After our exploration, we'll retrace our route, covering about 140km, until we return to our accommodation in Tinogasta.
